Leading up to the motorsports world’s most prestigious endurance race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Audi unveiled a new concept at Wörthersee Tour 2011 in Austria over the weekend. To emphasize its Audi A1 as a “tuner platform”, Audi designed the A1 Clubsport Quattro, a street racer based on its smallest vehicle. Fully optimized, the A1 underwent a transformation with the addition of a large double rear wing to create sufficient down force. Replacing large portion of the roof, engine compartment, and interior spaces are panels of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP). A large, black honeycomb shaped grille and front fender enable the maximum cool air flow to dissipate the engine heat. Another alteration is the rear side panel, widened to create an aggressive stance.
Though there isn’t rear seating area on the inside, the A1 Clubsport Quattro does have 2 racing helmets stored on their own compartment. Completely gutted to save weight, there will no infotainment system or speakers. Even the door handles, which in this case are just red nylon loops. All functions on the vehicle are operated through rocker-style switches and leather-covered carbon fiber steering wheel. One sliver of luxury – the leather, carbon fiber reinforced seats are the identical ones from its Audi R8 GT counterpart.
A mere show car from Audi, the A1 Clubsport Quattro also demonstrates the endless possibilities tuners have with new accessories to come with the A1. Adhesive decals enable a quick change of appearances, while for those who are more performance driven, can add a roof spoiler kit.
