Named after the Soviet Cosmonaut Program to see the viability of putting living creatures into orbital space flights, the Nike Zvezdochka was a continuation of designer Marc Newson’s lifelong interest in the mode of transport. The design came about in 2001 with a limited release in 2004, it was then an experimental design, which became a proven platform for several Nike footwear to followed in the years after. Ahead of his solo exhibition, Transport, at Gagosian Gallery, to open this evening in New York City, Nike re-tooled its production facility and created a very limited number of Nike Zvezdochka for the occasion. In 2 special colorways of Aegean Blue and Mahogany, inspired by the Aquariva speedboat by Newson, the centerpiece of the exhibit.
In a much welcomed change of pace from the incessant number of fashion shows after-parties last evening as Gagosian Shop, the retail branch of the iconic Gagosian Gallery, launched the Nike Zvezdochka in a personable environment where industrial designer himself greeted friends and fans alike. One unexpected visitor was fellow industrial designer Jonathan Ives, SVP Industrial Design of Apple and the man responsible for the urber-brand’s sleek futuristic look. (An unique moment during the evening when Newson was spotted with the coveted White iPhone 4 and Ives with a Ikepod Chronograph, designed by Newson)
Limited to less than 50 pairs worldwide, the Marc Newson x Nike Zvezdochka is now available at the Gagosian Shop, along with Nike Sportswear 21 Mercer flagship store.
