A little over a year after its debut on the floor of Geneva Motor Show, the moment many Porsche fanatics have waited for is finally here as the Stuttgart-base auto maker announced that its dealers around the globe will start to take purchasing orders for the Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid. Thought improbable just an year ago, the 918 Spyder Hybrid belongs to a new generation of super cars, where emphasis went beyond styling and speed, but ecologically sound performance as well. A traditional V8 engine with the ability to produce 500+ horsepower, an additional 218 horsepower is then added via the forms of 2 electric motors. However, engineers at Porsche estimate the new Spyder will only consume about 3.0L per 100 km, or a fuel economy of 78 miles per gallon. Styled in par with the likes of Carreera GT and its predecessor, the 917, the 918 Spyder will be made with lightweight, high strength carbon fiber-reinforced plastic monocoque at a cost of $845,000 per unit. And like other Porsche super car in the past, only limited number of units, cited less than 918 cars, will be produce. Production is slated to start at Porsche’s Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen factory on September 18th, or 9-18, 2013
