The Royal Oak by Swiss prestige watchmaker Audemars Piguet – celebrating its 40th anniversary this year — is famous for its tapisserie pattern dial. It’s essentially the face of the timepiece, giving it character and a distinct identity. The craftspeople at Audemars Piguet have been manufacturing the White Oak dial using the same techniques since 1972. Tradition and expert skill trump CNC technology in their workshop, as the following video demonstrates. Clocking in at two and half minutes, the short film depicts the various steps and intricate work that go into the construction of the dial, from the etching of the tapisserie pattern to the application of white gold hour markers.
