As a way to flex its engineering prowess, BMW, as well as McLaren, branched off into the design consultancy business. But the trend isn’t a new one. In fact, it all started with Porsche and its PORSCHE DESIGN subsidiary some forty years ago. Established by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, who passed away April of this year, Porsche Design allowed the Porsche family members to focus on design while leave the day-to-day managerial duties to the company’s executives. But almost immediately, Porsche Design found the need of its expertise in everything from dentist drills, mass transit equipments, home decor, even bicycle locks.
To honor the 40 years of its well designed concepts, PORSCHE DESIGN went back to one of the company’s very first creation, the Porsche Design watches. Packaged in a special boxset, each to feature three iconic models from PORSCHE DESIGN Heritage P’6500 Series. The first entirely black watch when launched in 1972, the P’6510 Black Chronograph really captured the essence of modernist design. The P’6520 Compass Watch followed in 1978 and like the name suggested, came with a removable compass as well. Finally, it was the P’6530 Titanium Chronograph in 1980, another breakthrough for timepiece design as the first watch with a mostly titanium construct.
Limited to only 100 units, the exclusive boxsets will be available through PORSCHE DESIGN flagship stores worldwide and retails at around US$ 20,400.
