In the midst of unwarranted hype and relentless promotion, it is easy to forget those paved the way in the past, which all make this project more compelling. In coordination with Le Coq Sportif, Scotland’s hanon shop will celebrate the achievements of a reluctant hero – tennis player Arthur Ashe.
The lanky child from a deprived portion of Virginia, Ashe, self-taught, became the first black player to break the silent racial barrier among the haughty sport of tennis. His achievements, some 72 titles in all, including the 1968 U.S. Open and 1975 Wimbledon, present the possibilities for future generation of African American athletes to accomplish what was deemed impossible just a few decades ago. Unfortunately, Ashe’s life was cut short when he passed away at the age of 49.
In honour of the man and all of his accomplishments, hanon will issue 100 pairs of Le Coq Sportif Arthur Ashe Premium to its original white leather with pigskin suede lining specification some 40 years ago. To come with a collectible card set, a leather phone pouch, plus custom designed packaging and a cotton dust bag, part of the sales proceeds will go to the Arthur Ashe Foundation in New York City, to further the cause Ashe started so many years ago.
